In brief: Paraguay ties Costa Rica in Copa America
Soccer: Paraguay and Costa Rica tied 0-0 on Saturday night in Copa America in their Group A opener at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
Justo Villar was in goal for Paraguay, Patrick Pemberton for Costa Rica.
Costa Rica’s Kendall Waston was sent off in the 94th minute for a reckless tackle on Nelson Valdez.
On Tuesday night, Costa Rica will face the United States at Soldier Field in Chicago, and Paraguay will play Colombia at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Colombia opened with a 2-0 victory over the United States on Friday night in Santa Clara, California.
The top two teams in the group will advance.
Guerrero – the leading scorer of the last two Copa America tournaments – found the back of the net with a diving header, off the bending feed from Edison Flores, from the top of the 6-yard box in the 61st minute.
Ecuador came the closest to scoring in front of the crowd of 53,158, but an apparent goal was waved off as the ball was ruled to have gone out of bounds before the shot.
Kuchar shares lead
at soggy Memorial
Golf: Matt Kuchar finished the third round of the Memorial Tournament at the Muirfield Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, in a share of the lead, just how he started.
But it was a wet and wild ride for Kuchar and everyone else at Muirfield Village.
Kuchar fell off the pace quickly with two bogeys only to surge back into the lead with four birdies and two par saves in a six-hole stretch.
A bogey on the final hole gave him a 2-under-par 70 and a share of the lead with William McGirt (64) and Gary Woodland (69) at 14-under 202.
Kuchar won the 2013 tournament.
Twenty players were separated by four shots going into the final round.
The 31-year-old French player, winless on the tour, had nine birdies in a 13-hole stretch in the round that started on No. 10. She tied the record on the Donald Ross-designed course set by Laura Davies in 2005 and matched by Jimin Kang that year and Jennifer Johnson in 2014.
Andrade breaks course record: Billy Andrade broke the course record with a 9-under 63 for a share of the lead with Joe Durant and Todd Hamilton in the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines, Iowa.
Durant had a 65, and Hamilton shot a 67 to match Andrade at 10-under 134 at the Wakonda Club.
Andrade broke the course record of 64 set by Bart Bryant in 2013 and matched by Bill Glasson in 2014. Andrade also tied the tournament record of 62 set by Kirk Triplett in 2012 at Glen Oaks.
John Daly, the senior newcomer who helped draw a record opening-round crowd on Friday, shot his second straight 74 to drop to 4 over.
Auburn rallies past Georgia at WCWS
Miscellany: Auburn scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Georgia 4-3 in the Women’s College World Series at ASA Hall of Fame stadium in Oklahoma City.
The Tigers (56-10) need one win to advance to the championship series.
Georgia scored runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh.
Sydney Romero got the best of her matchup with her older sister and Oklahoma beat Michigan 7-5 in the Women’s College World Series.
Sydney, a freshman, had two hits, including a solo home run for the Sooners (54-7). They won their 29th straight game and are one win from the championship series.
In the elimination games, Sandra Simmons homered and drove in two runs to help LSU beat Alabama 6-4 and Alex Powers had four hits, including a solo home run, to lead Florida State past UCLA 8-4.
Farah to end career after 2017 season: World and Olympic long-distance champion Mo Farah said the world championship in 2017 will be his last major competition on the track before he turns his full attention to road-running.
Farah has won two Olympic and five world titles over 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
Kings re-sign McNabb to 2-year contract: The Los Angeles Kings re-signed defenseman Brayden McNabb to a two-year contract.
McNabb has been a dependable presence on defense the past two seasons, scoring 38 points in 152 games. He had two goals and 12 assists with 92 penalty minutes in 81 games last season for Los Angeles, missing only the regular-season opener.
The Kings acquired McNabb in March 2014 in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted him in the third round in 2009.
Harzand wins English Derby: Harzand held off fast-finishing favorite US Army Ranger to win the English Derby at Epson Racecourse in Surrey, England, earning $1.27 million for his owners from the richest race run in Britain.
Ridden by Pat Smullen, Harzand – a 13-2 shot – won by 1 1/2 lengths in front of Queen Elizabeth II and an estimated 125,000 spectators.
US Army Ranger, the 7-2 favorite, was one of five runners in the field from trainer Aidan O’Brien. He was at the back of the 16-horse field for most of the race before launching a late attack on Harzand, who stayed strong in the final furlong.
Raisman wins tune-up: Gymnast Aly Raisman took another step toward a second straight Olympics, winning the all-around at the Secret U.S. Classic at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
The 22-year-old from Massachusetts, who won gold in London in the floor exercise, scored 59.25 points to finish just less than one point ahead of 18-year-old Rachel Gowey.
