Smell of death permeates Myanmar cities after quake kills over 1,600 and leaves countless buried
MANDALAY, Myanmar (AP) — The smell of decaying bodies permeated the streets of Myanmar’s second-largest city on Sunday as people worked frantically by hand to clear rubble in the hope of finding someone still alive, two days after a massive earthquake struck that killed more than 1,600 people and left countless others buried. The 7.7 magnitude quake hit midday Friday with an epicenter near Mandalay, bringing down scores of buildings and damaging other infrastructure like the city’s airport. Relief efforts have been hampered by buckled roads, downed bridges, spotty communications and the challenges of operating in a country in the midst of a civil war.
Trump says he's considering ways to serve a third term as president
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump says he's considering ways to serve a third term. “I'm not joking,” he says in an NBC News interview. It's the clearest indication he's looking for ways to breach a constitutional barrier against continuing to lead the country after his second term ends in early 2029. He later told reporters Sunday on Air Force One that ““I have had more people ask me to have a third term.” The 22nd Amendment says no one can be elected president more than twice. It was added to the Constitution in 1951 after President Franklin Roosevelt was elected four times in a row.
Elon Musk hands out $1 million payments after Wisconsin Supreme Court declines request to stop him
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Elon Musk has given out $1 million checks to two Wisconsin voters, declaring them spokespeople for his political group. That's ahead of a Wisconsin Supreme Court election that the tech billionaire cast as critical to President Donald Trump’s agenda and “the future of civilization.” A unanimous court on Sunday refused to hear a last-minute attempt by the state’s Democratic attorney general to stop Musk from handing over the checks to two voters, a ruling that came just minutes before the planned start of the rally.
Iran has rejected direct negotiations with the US in response to Trump's letter
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s president says Tehran has rejected direct negotiations with the United States in response to a letter from President Donald Trump over its rapidly advancing nuclear program. Sunday's remarks from President Masoud Pezeshkian offered the first official acknowledgment of how Iran responded to Trump’s letter. It also suggests that tensions may further rise between Tehran and Washington. But Pezeshkian left open the possibility of indirect negotiations. The U.S. State Department responded to Pezeshkian by saying that Trump has made it clear that "the United States cannot allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.” Trump said before Pezeshkian’s comments that he was considering military action and secondary tariffs if Iran doesn’t agree to a nuclear deal.
'Eid of sadness': Palestinians in Gaza mark Muslim holiday with dwindling food and no end to war
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have little to celebrate as they mark the normally festive Eid al-Fitr. They face rapidly dwindling food supplies and renewed fighting in the Israel-Hamas war. Israel's latest strikes on Sunday killed at least 19 people. Most were women and children. Many Palestinians prayed outside demolished mosques on the Muslim holiday marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. And there was anger as the bodies of 14 emergency responders were recovered in the southern city of Rafah a week after an Israeli attack. Mediators are trying to get a shattered ceasefire back on track.
Trump finds fault with both Putin and Zelenskyy as he tries to push for deal to end war in Ukraine
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has lashed out at both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressing frustration with the Russian and Ukrainian leaders as he struggles to forge a truce to end the war. Although Trump insisted to reporters on Sunday that “we’re making a lot of progress,” he acknowledged that “there’s tremendous hatred” between the two men. It's a fresh indication that negotiations may not produce the swift conclusion that he promised during the campaign. Trump told NBC News he was “angry” that Putin questioned Zelenskyy’s credibility at a time when they are trying to work out a deal. And he later told reporters he was unhappy that Zelenskyy was trying to renegotiate a deal over U.S. access to critical minerals in Ukraine.
Trump's promised 'Liberation Day' of tariffs is coming. Here's what it could mean for you
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says “Liberation Day” is coming. On Wednesday, he plans to roll out a set of tariffs that he promises will free the United States from foreign goods. The details of Trump’s next round of import taxes are still sketchy. Most economic analyses say average U.S. families would have to absorb the cost of his tariffs in the form of higher prices and lower incomes. Trump is inviting CEOs to the White House to say they're investing billion in new projects to avoid the import taxes. It's also possible the tariffs are short-lived if Trump feels he can cut a deal after imposing them.
Asian shares are sharply lower after Wall Street tumbles
NEW YORK (AP) — Asian shares are sharply lower after another wipeout slammed Wall Street as worries built about a potentially toxic mix of worsening inflation and a slowing U.S. economy. Tokyo's benchmark fell nearly 4%. U.S. futures and oil prices were lower. On Friday, the S&P 500 dropped 2% for one of its worst days of the last two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.7%, and the Nasdaq composite tumbled 2.7%. Worries are mounting as shoppers spend less due to concerns about inflation and the economy. Treasury yields fell, even after a worse-than-expected inflation report.
Richard Chamberlain, TV actor who starred in 'Dr. Kildare,' dies at 90
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Chamberlain, the handsome hero of the 1960s television series “Dr. Kildare” who found a second career as “king of the miniseries,” has died at age 90. Chamberlain died Saturday night in Waimanalo, Hawaii of complications following a stroke. That is according to publicist Harlan Boll. Tall, with classic good looks and romantic style, Chamberlain became an instant favorite with teenage girls as the compassionate physician on the TV series that aired from 1961 to 1966. Not until 2003 did he acknowledge publicly what Hollywood insiders had long known, that he was gay. He made the revelation in his autobiography, “Shattered Love.”
