Cole Caufield, the Montreal Canadiens’ first-round draft choice in 2019, has been selected to the 25-man team representing the United States at the world junior championships this month in Edmonton. The team was introduced Saturday at the conclusion of a training camp in Plymouth, Mich.

Caufield, a sophomore forward at the University of Wisconsin, is one of eight holdovers from last year’s team.

“Our players and staff have done everything we’ve asked of them, all of the safety protocols and considerations, to make hockey the focus of our training camp,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, general manager of the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team and also the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “We had a great week of camp and we have certainly faced adversity, but we believe in these 25 players and we all have the same goal.”

Team USA will face Russia in its first game, Dec. 25 at Rogers Place.

On Friday, Canadiens defence prospect Kaiden Guhle was named to Team Canada. The only other Canadiens prospect with a chance to play in the world juniors is Jan Mysak, who is part of the final Czech training camp.
