Local roundup: NHL Sharks ink Prout to one-year contract

The San Jose Sharks have signed Kingsville native Dalton Prout to a one-year contract for a reported $800,000 on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Prout was a sixth-round pick by Columbus in 2010 and has appeared in 262 games over seasons in the NHL.

“Dalton is a very smart defenceman who has shown he can move the puck cleanly under pressure and keep his turnover rates low,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a release. “We believe his ability to hold the defensive zone blue line is underrated and that he is one of the best at limiting net-front rebounds by effectively using his size and stick. We’re excited to add his responsible defensive play to our blue line.”

Flyers deal

The Leamington Flyers have acquired goaltender Matthew Waite from the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the British Columbia Hockey League.

The son of former NHL goalie Jimmy Waite, the 19-year-old netminder spent two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Moncton Wildcats before heading to B.C. last season. The five-foot-11, 163-pound Waite is set to begin studies at the University of Windsor in the fall.

“We love Matt because he’s a veteran goalie with experience at the next level,” Leamington general manager Justin Solcz said in a release. “We expect him to be a leader and hope we can help him develop and transition into playing at the U Sports level next year.”

To acquire Waite, the Flyers dealt goaltender Zach Borgiel to Cowichan Valley. The 19-year-old Borgiel posted a 2.25 goals-against average and .924 save percentage in 28 games for Leamington last season.
