NHL’s Detroit Red Wings denounce use of logo at white nationalist rally

The National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings on Saturday condemned a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., after white nationalist groups were seen holding items with the team’s logo.

“The Detroit Red Wings vehemently disagree with and are not associated in any way with the event taking place today in Charlottesville, Va,” the team tweeted in a statement.

“The Red Wings believe that hockey is for everyone and we celebrate the great diversity of our fan base and our nation. We are exploring every possible legal action as it pertains to the misuse of our logo in this disturbing demonstration.”

USA Today reported that a Michigan white supremacist group called the Detroit Right Wings uses a slight variation on the team’s logo — a red and white car tire with two bird wings attached.

{mosads}One person died after a car ran down a group of counter-protesters during a white nationalist rally in the city on Saturday. Police dispersed hundreds of white nationalists, declaring an “unlawful assembly” hours before a planned rally to protest the taking down of a Confederate statue in the town.

President Trump decried the incident in general but did not single out a group, saying Saturday: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides.”
